2017-2018 Board Bios

Chris Orszulak, President, is the father of four children, three LMI alums and one current student.  Since graduating from Amherst College with a B.A. in Economics in 2001, he has spent his entire career in the financial service industry at investment banking firm Keefe, Bruyette and Woods.  Chris is a Managing Director in the equity and fixed income institutional sales business.  He and his family reside in Longmeadow and enjoy riding their bikes to school every day!

Susanne B. Chuku, Ph.D., Treasurer/Financial Oversight, is an Associate Professor of Economics and the Director of the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning at Westfield State University. Her research interests are human capital and economic growth. She teaches courses in econometrics, macroeconomic theory, labor economics, economic growth and development, and money and banking. She holds a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and Economics from the University in Augsburg, Germany, and an MA and PhD in Economics from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. She and her husband Victor have two children: her son is a LMI alum and her daughter currently attends LMI.

Shauna Burdick, Secretary, was born and raised in Western Massachusetts.  A graduate of Syracuse University, she earned a B.A. in Public Policy and a B.S. in Finance.  She furthered her education, earning an M.S. in Business with a concentration in Technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).  Shauna has worked for the MassMutual Financial Group for 12 years, focusing on Deferred Compensation Plan services.  Along with her husband, she currently resides in Somers, CT, and enjoys spreading the word regarding the value of a Montessori education at LMI to those outside of the Longmeadow community.  Her two children both attended Longmeadow Montessori and she remains involved with and thankful for the LMI community.

Susan A. Bell, Ed.D., has been serving as the Superintendent of the Windsor Locks Public Schools since 2014. She has served as Director of School Counseling and Principal of Windsor Locks High School, as well as Assistant Principal of Windsor Locks Middle School, and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, where she supported teachers in making significant changes in their instruction to have a greater impact on all children’s learning success.  As Superintendent, Susie’s passion for supporting children in their quest to constantly discover the best version of themselves continues to shape the improvements across her district.  Susie and her husband, David, enrolled their first child at LMI and fell in love with the school’s philosophy, approach to teaching and learning, and attention to conservation and environmental justice.  Their daughter is currently enrolled at LMI and absolutely loves the school. 

Kate Dion, Esq., is an attorney at Robinson Cole, LLP.  She practices in the areas of education law, civil litigation, and government/internal investigations.  She has a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a J.D. from Western New England University School of Law.  Prior to joining Robinson Cole, she clerked for the Honorable Robert E. Breach of the Connecticut Appellate Court.  Kate serves on several other Boards of Directors and volunteers with various community groups.  Kate and her husband Justin are thrilled to be able to give the gift of a Montessori education to their two daughters, one is an alum and one currently attends LMI.

Gabrielle Huffstutler, is a consultant specializing in Organization Transformations and Leadership Development.  Throughout her career, she has coached and consulted with clients who are facing impossible mandates and ensures they are set up for success.  Gabrielle and her husband Gabe moved to Longmeadow from Denver, CO with their two children, her son is an LMI alum, and her daughter currently attends LMI.

John Kole, is a father of two children currently attending LMI. John is a partner in Long River Ventures, an early-stage technology venture capital fund based in Boston. Since graduating from Princeton University with a B.A. in International Relations and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, John has spent the bulk of his career in finance and technology, primarily as a venture capital investor. He was a founding partner of Comcast Ventures, has served on the Board of Trustees of Baystate Health, and is an active software developer.

Katie Lynk Wartman, Ph.D., is an independent consultant and research professional who specializes in higher education assessment and administration projects.  Her research has been published in several books and peer-reviewed academic journals.  She has been a college administrator and has taught high school and graduate-level classes.  She holds an AB from Bowdoin College with teaching certification, an EdM in Higher Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a PhD in Higher Education from Boston College.  She and her husband Dave have three children; two are LMI alums and one is a future LMI student. 

Longmeadow Montessori Internationale’s Board of Directors is made up of parents whose children attend LMI, have worked on various projects for the school, and then joined the Board of Directors.

These dedicated parents help set policies for the school and help with finances, legalities, fundraising, and special events.

The Board provides leadership in support of LMI’s mission. Board Committees include: Executive Committee, Community Development Committee, Committee on Directors, and Finance/Long-Range Planning Committee. The Board also makes up Task Force Groups for: Tuition, 3-4 Year Planning, Auditing, Marketing, Annual Fund & Auction, Building & Facilities, and Health.

LMI’s Board of Directors meets monthly and parents are welcome to attend the first segment of each meeting. They would welcome any of your thoughts throughout the school year.
